Knitting vs crocheting which is easier
Most of us would love to use luxury yarns whenever possible, but some of us are on a budget, baby. I feel like a broken record, but….. Not always, and every project is different. Obviously a large blanket would use more yarn than a small toy, regardless if it was knitted or crocheted.
But if you are really interested in using hand-dyed wools for your projects and your budget permits it, knitting is your best option. Here are some of my favorite yarns that are at a medium price, not too pricey, but not dirt cheap, but both great quality. I always wait to buy when it goes on sale. Momma has kids in college, so no full priced yarn for me.
If you have made it to the bottom of this behemoth, then you deserve a big hug and a pat on the back. That may sound extreme, but I truly believe in the power of working with your hands. I believe in making things and using your creativity to make your life better as well as those around you.
I need to move on from double crochet and actually learn some stitches! Yes, there are a few more stitches than double crochet! This is so much great content. She was so excited, it made her day. I love to buy local. I think you should do some punk punks for fall, I bet they would sell like hot cakes. I used my punkin and gourd tops for the tops. Love your work Elise.
Thanks so much, Jersey! I wish we were neighbors too!! The pumpkins were so fun and using the gourd tops is such a fantastic idea! What a great idea for a post! I think making sure your craft matches your goals is a good thing! Oh, it would be torture to have to decide! Thank you for putting up this post, though! It was fun reading through it. I still want to do both …. Me too, Anja!! Hopefully it will help beginners to choose one and get stitching!
What about if you are left handed? Would one of them be easier? I am having a hard time deciding which to learn in addition to finding directions on how to learn the skill left-handed. Any recommendations? I know left handers who crochet and knit! Check out Bhooked on Youtube! She has a ton of tutorials for crocheting and knitting for lefties! Hope that helps! Elise, though I have never touched needles, you make me consider trying. I am more a fan of the results than desirous of creating.
Your creations are simply works of art! I will take that virtual hug now, please:. Such great information Elise! I can agree with many of your recommendations and want to take a deeper dive into the others and look into them more!
Both crafts are both so enjoyable and rewarding. Way to go! LOVE this post! You did a great job! I think one of these days I shall learn to crochet. Crocheting is definitely simpler, in general! They are both wonderful hobbies!! I learned the basic stitches, chain, double crochet UK and treble UK from my mother when I was about 10 years old.
Crocheting has been my interest and helps if I am feeling down, the upside of this is I am now being asked to make toys for my granddaughters friends for their babies. I still make the occasional sweater for my family. Thank you so very much for sharing! I will make them all day long for toys but human sizes are just soooo big!!
I am in a quandary! I am 77yrs. Old now and learned the basics of knitting from my Grandmother when I was around 5yo. From there I taught myself the rest. Circular needles let you knit in a circular motion, ideal for projects like cowl scarves and hats. As you progress in projects, you will find that having one size of each needle is not necessarily sufficient in knitting. In knitting, the "V"-shaped stitches of your work hang off the needle and are transferred from one needle to the other, loop by loop.
Starting and stopping your knit project in the middle of progress means that stitches could be left on both needles making it slightly unwieldy.
And keeping the knit stitches from falling off both needles in transit will require needle stoppers. It also means, you may be required to offload your work onto stitch holders while another piece gets knit on the same pair of needles. Crochet requires the use of a hook, which comes in a range of sizes. You make loops with the hook to create the essential crochet stitches such as the single , double , and treble stitch. The initial loop is a slip knot that is followed by a chain.
Unlike knitting, crochet stitches resemble a chain of small knots. You can create several slip knots and chains for your project, but should try to keep an even tension as you work through each stitch. You choose the size of the hook based on the size of the stitch needed, and it's a good idea to consider the weight of the yarn for your project, too.
A small hook won't work very well with a yarn that has a higher weight. But you would want a Q hook to crochet larger afghans, sweaters, and rugs with jumbo weight yarn. Oftentimes, one basic set of hooks will be enough to most of your crochet projects.
You can have multiple projects going that require the same hook without having to worry about the project size, holding stitches, or if you're crocheting regular or in the round. In crochet, the stitches are simply looped onto the piece so there's no transferring of stitches from one tool to another. Both are really methods of stitching yarn together, just in different styles. In knitting, the stitches form a "V" shape.
Keep those hook going! Thank you for commenting. Agree — never know which one people will like. Try them both and see. Hi Lena — they can both be great stress relievers! The stitches are larger than knitting typically and you might be able to work up a scarf faster. I have crocheted since i was about I mostly made afghams. Two years ago i decided i wanrwd to learn to knit socks and boy rhat waa a mistake! I know i have pulled out my project at least 10 times. The only things i can truly knit are a very simple hat and wash cloths.
I can make mitered squares so i may use the oodles of sock yarn i purchased to make a c p zy memory blanket. I also love the thought of buymini skeins or hanks of yarn and can put that towards blankets. I have gone back to crocheting snd i have two gramny squares on the go.
I am really emjoying worling pm both I wont ever totally give up knitting but crocheting is and always will bey first love. Bye the wau i also cross stitch and diamomd paint! I really enjoy crocheting and knitting. I am not sure which is my all time favorite. It usually depends on my mood. Last winter, I was crocheting. This year, I am knitting a scarf. Its just my preference at the time. The edges of my work were all over the place. Eventually I gave up on crochet.
Mum died a few years ago and I inherited her yarn stash. Who knew? At least with knitting knit and purl are the same the world over. So either I learn US style or I get used to doing mental conversions..
I recently watched a YouTube video and tried to learn again so that I could know both crafts but was unsuccessful. I say obsession because I call myself a crochet addict I need to have something on my hook all the time. It is great therapy although I imagine knitting is too. I was about 10 years old when I started to crochet and that was 56 years ago. I find crochet to be very creative and I make my own patterns at times. I have to admit there are times I see a beautiful knitted garment and think for just a moment I could try knitting but then I pick up my crochet hook and I am away lost in my thoughts while my hands create.
Liz — you can make many other things than a stuffed animal. You can make hats, scarves, jumpers, cardigans, tops and other things like coasters, flowers, pillows and many more with crochet. I love crochet check out my page crochetmanara on instagram if anyone would like to see what i make.

The resulting projects look different, too. Comparing Crocheting left vs. Knitting right Knitting is great for items that need delicate stitches such as soft sweaters or fluffy cowls.
