Why is motherboard called so

The term "motherboard" the topic of this thread is a PC-era invention, and one that originated with PCs. Prior to that it was mainly "backplane" and some other term I can't think of that IBM used -- they always had to have their own terms for everything. That's questionable. Modular oscilloscopes date back to at least the 's, that's almost two decades before any PC. The term may have been used outside of the computer industry, but computers, up until the Apple II era, used backplanes, not motherboards, since there were essentially no active components on the backplane.

And "mainboard" was the term generally used for non-computer boards with smaller boards attached. Yes, modular oscilloscopes date back to the 60s if not earlier , but they used modules plugged into a housing.

IBM used the term "planar. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google. Sign up using Facebook. Sign up using Email and Password.

Some will not even accept parts even one generation behind, such as the CPU and memory. Others, like the video plug have not changed in years. Some of the plugs, such as the video, keyboard and mouse plugs, are a special color. These colors make it easier to pair the plug to the port. KidzSearch Safe Wikipedia for Kids. All other "expansion cards" used in PC's plug directly into this board, both to draw power from the computer's power supply and to exchange information with the rest of the system. Because they plug into this main circuit board, in electronics lingo, expansion cards are also known as "daughterboards," while the main board is called the "motherboard.
