I do not mean convert to Linux! It will run Mint but only in RAM, it will make no changes to your hard drive. Once at the Mint desktop find an application called Gparted in the start menu and use that to 1 format the 18GB partition to NTFS and then 2 resize that partition to the full size available.

Linux normally ignores all problems of Windows permissions! Once you have this drive partitioned to 1 partition containing the whole drive shut down, remove the memory stick, re-boot and you will be back in Windows.
